How we got here part 7...
So the date was on. OMG the date was on!!! I WAS GOING ON A DATE WITH HIM! A REAL ONE!!!!!
What was I going to wear??????
A shopping trip was in order. With only a few days left before the big day I took on the Mall. I knew it was probably going to be a casual date so no need to really dress up. But I still wanted to look nice!
I will spare you the details about how I hated everything I tried on, and how I thought I was fat, and how nothing was what I pictured, and how I whined, and pouted and finally I didn't really care. After all he saw me in my polyester Mc D0nalds uniform and STILL wanted to date me and anything beyond that HAD to be an improvement!!
Our date was on Saturday, December 14, 1991.
Remember my Mom and her husband were out of town and I was staying with Grandma. Before the date, she told me the rules.
- You must be home at 11pm. Not 11:01, not even 11:00 and 1 second. 11 SHARP.
- You must stay in our town. No going to the city.
- You must not step foot on his college campus.
- you must not step foot in his dorm room.
- You must follow all of these rules.
I was soooo nervous. This was the first time we really spent a lot of time together. I mean we had a lot of phone conversations, and brief moments together but this was a real bona fide date!
He picked me up at 6 and he met my Grandma. Yes, she told him the rules. She had 11 kids of her own and knew how forgetful us teenagers could be and she wanted to make sure he was notified of the conditions!
Then we were off.
We went to dinner at Oliver's near the airport, I had ravioli, he had soup and salad. We went to see a movie "Problem Child 2". Sounds typical right?
But to me, it wasn't typical at all.
My whole 16 years of life I have never met a boy like him. You girls out there remember what 16 year old boys were like right? They are more interested in their friends, making out, and sex than anything else. Tom wasn't like that at all. During our date he opened the doors for me, he never tried to grope me in the movies, he held my hand and my hand fit perfectly inside of his. He was respectful, kind, interested in what I had to say, and he made me laugh.
After the movie, we broke the rules. LOL Well actually we broke the rules when we went to the movies because the theater was located in the city..oopsy! I will clarify after the movie we broke 2 more rules because we went back to his dorm room! Sorry Grandma...but 17 years later see how well it worked out?
I had been on a college campus before the year before when I went to visit my older sister. WHOOO that was fun too! I borrowed her roommates ID (we really did look a like) and we went to a bar and I danced with a lot of college boys. Remember Steph??? Fun times!
Anyway we went back to his dorm room. He was worried since we were breaking the rules and all but I assured him it was F I N E! We get to his room and the first thing I notice was how NEAT and orderly it was. I quickly scanned the room...his desk was on the right hand side just as you walk into the room, then his bed, then the TV and microwave. Along the ceiling were several strands of Christmas lights and several RC airplanes hanging from the middle of the room. He was lucky he didn't have a room mate which was good because the room was very very small.
We sat on the floor and just talked. I thought FOR SURE he was finally going to kiss me. We came close soooooo many times and then he would back away. I think he was taking the respectful thing a tad too far! I really wanted him to kiss me already!
We didn't stay at his dorm for very long, because I had to be back by 11pm SHARP!
We pulled up at Grandmas.
I thanked him for dinner and a movie.
He asked if he could walk me to the door.
I said yes.
He opened the car door for me and we walked to the dimly lit back porch.
I turned around to say "Thank you" again.
We were face to face and we were so close I could count his eyelashes.
My stomach was fluttering and my heart was beating a mile a minute.
to be continued..............................
sooo not fair! spill it sister!
